The story about how our business started.

It all begin in summer of 2020, when world was hit by a pandemic and we saw how beautifully earth was reviving when humans were locked inside their houses. It was amazing to see rainbows and birds in the sky and when dolphins were dancing and flamingos were painting the sky pink but it was also the time when we saw many humans struggling to just survive and that is when we realized how badly we were harming with every little step. And that was the time when we thought of brand Akanya, and we decided to do our bit for the nature and made our mission to bring sustainable fashion to everyone.

Our people

There our people behind the clothes we make, and we put them first. Too often garment workers are subject to terrible conditions, that’s why we have our own studio in Delhi we all work together. It is our responsibility to create a safe, healthy and fair working environment for our teams and even our artisans throughout our supply chain and that is why we make sure to only collaborate with brands and source only from who have same beliefs as ours.

Our stuff

While our clothes are more sustainable than most stuff out there, we also make them to be timelessly fashionable and comfortable. We make everything from low-impact materials, rescued deadstock, and upcycle.

Every week, we are going to put out new collections. We start with sample designs and only make more if you order so that we can save textile materials and save them from going waste.

Our sustainable practices

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do from fabrics to our trims, packaging, and evern the process like washing and drying.

The fabrics used to create our garments are all sustainable in some way, shape or form. Below you can find a description of the different types of fabrics we use. Additionally, we repurpose every little scrap leftover from the garment that are produced.

We keep sustainability in our minds at every steps and that is why we only use recycled or resuced deadstock buttons, zippers and even fusing while making.

The bag we use to ship is made out of 100% cotton muslin which we have upcycled from testfits and the best thing is it is reusable.

The tissue paper in which products are wrapped in is made entirely from post-consumer and post-industrial content which makes it both recyclable and biodegradable.

The stickers holding the tissue paper closed, as well as the “Thank you” card sent with each order, are made with 100% post-consumer paper.

While making our clothes

We try to make sure to be sustainable whenever we can such as we try to use artisan made hand woven, hand-embroidered, hand printed fabrics as much as we can. And we wash everything by hand to reduce water and electricity wastage and hang dry to increase the life of garment and save electricity.

Closed-loop business model

In an effort to be as closed loop as possible, we offer a buy back program for any of our piece that you don’t want anymore and we will donate or recycle it. You will have to pay for shipping and you will get in-store credit for our shop. simply fill out the form below and we will contact you to get the details.

What akanya stands for

Always in progress

Although the sustainable approach we are taking is nowhere near perfect, with time, we are hoping to increase the ways in which we can help reduce harm in the environment from the fashion industry. We are constantly learning and hope you can join us in the process. If you see something we can improve on, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are always learning and growing.
